MDUSD Parent Advisory Council Meeting – Wednesday, February 1st, 7pm Dent Center

Presented to WAPFC on Tuesday, February 21st, by PFC Parent District Rep, Faye Mettler

Topics as follows:

1.       Budget Update - Steven Lawrence

·         Continuation of budget report.  See MDUSD website for the complete power point presentation.

·         http://www.mdusd.org/NewsRoom/Documents/pac-presentation-02-01-2012.pdf

·         Teacher negotiations currently underway, budget power point presentation clarifies the “banked money” in effort to keep the district from sliding further.

·         With governor’s tax passed in November, $14/pupil lost.  Without the tax an estimated $300/pupil loss + 20 furlough days.

·         CA lags behind the rest of the US in education spending, the lowest it’s been in the state for 40years.  Estimated -$2,856 per student less in 2010-11.

·         The top five states, in terms of student performance on the NAEP, are Vermont, Rhode Island, Wyoming, New Jersey, and Maine.  The bottom five are;  California, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, and Arizona.  California has fallen from number one to number 46 in per-ADA funding as indicated by the National Assessments of Educational (outlined in power point).

·         Transportation cuts, $64/student.

·         Funding per ADA, should be getting $6,700, but only receiving $5,200.

·         As a positive, $5 million/year in revenue from solar starting next school year.

·         However, as indicated last month, if the tax initiative doesn’t pass in November, more triggers will be released with even more profound budget reductions from the State.

·         What parents can do, communicate via letters or email to State representatives letting them know education funding must be the #1 priority in Sacramento.

2.       Master Plan for English Learners

·         On the District web site, http://www.mdusd.org/NewsRoom/Pages/DraftEnglishLearnerMasterPlan.aspx and further information at http://www.mdusd.org/Departments/sass/Pages/elp.aspx.

college or career of their choice.
